Elements from Rachel Gillard-Jones’ installation piece Many Hands Make Light Work have been selected to show at Rome Art Week as part of the Society for Embroidered Work exhibition called Surface and Depth. The exhibition takes place at the beautiful Palacio Velli Expo in the vibrant Trastevere district on 26-30 October 2021.
Rachel is thrilled to be selected for this exhibition. She says that SEW is a dynamic group, dedicated to advocating that Stitched Art is Art. It is a wonderful opportunity to see textile art rightly on a equal footing with other art and as part of an internationally-renowned art festival. Covid restrictions allowing, Rachel is looking forward to meeting other exhibiting textile artists. She says it will be a joy to see their artworks up close; understanding their inspirations and techniques and making new friends.
Rachel Gillard-Jones uses textiles found in the home to explore stitch, embellishment and fabric manipulation. Her artwork uses clusters as a form to showcase the stitches and techniques. This exhibition focuses on textiles found in the kitchen; Making something beautiful from items that are not normally considered for their aesthetic value.
The glorification of the domestic textile and the home setting seems particularly relevant now, when many of us were so recently confined at home in lockdown.
