Karina Haake: The Traveller’s Case

In April and May 2021, we had the Opening and Closing ceremonies of The Traveller’s Case at 210 Window Gallery, Brixton. Brilliantly curated by Lena Augustinsson, they were held outside, correctly socially distanced and with timed entry. For the Finissage, I presented the stories of each case, each inspired by a particular journey. There was also a mini video gallery chamber for individual viewing.

Whilst working in Northern Italy a few years back, I had decided to make collages only with materials found on my journey- maps, train tickets, hotel bills, etc.  When I returned to the studio, I turned the collages into a uniquely personalised fabric – embroidering onto soluble fabric, enmeshing the text, paper and foil into the thread.

These collages became the starting point for my Traveller’s Case series, which I then developed in Lockdown, inspired by a longing to be back on the road, and the stories, memories and tales from travelling in Sweden, Malta Italy, Spain, South America and India.
